Our History

In September 1959, the booming oil town of Odessa gave birth to a new school which opened its doors to 1,159 new faces. This newly established academic institution strove to set the highest of standards, and in doing this, a lasting tradition of excellence was created. Academically, athletically, and artistically, these Permian High School students strove for success, and often succeeded. Within the first decade of its history, fans and supporters coined the nationally recognized nickname “MOJO,” which has become synonymous with Permian High School itself. Chanted and echoed by students, faculty, and supporters, MOJO stands for the “magic” that comes from the hard work, dedication, and quest for excellence that has always been exemplified by students of Permian. From the 1960’s to the present, Permian bands, choirs, and orchestras have been recognized through performances at state, regional, and national events. Permian musicians take great pride in having been invited to perform at the following prestigious conventions:
